Professional background
Prof. Dr. Alexander W. Friedrich is the head of the department for Medical Microbiology and Infection Control of the University Hospital Groningen. Since many years he got intensively involved in the broad spectrum of infectious disease and infection control and he continuously points out the need of close co-operation between academic and public health institutions in the field of infectious disease and their control. His research activities comprise basic research in the field of food-borne infections (e.g. Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli) and the applied research in the field of molecular typing strategies ("genetic fingerprint") in order to combat effectively micro-organisms that are cause of hospital acquired infections (e.g. MRSA, VRE, Pseudomonas spp, see[top]
Duties within MRSA-net
Prof. Friedrich is the project leader of MRSA-net and he leads the MRSA-net co-ordination centre. He is one of the co-ordinators of EUREGIO MRSA-net. His main duty is the evidence-based conception of strategies for the de facto implementation of mechanism in order to control MRSA . He co-operates closely with Mrs. Dr. Daniels-Haardt of the LIGA and Dr. Ron Hendrix from Enschede in the creation of networks against MRSA on the. Furthermore, he is in continuous contact with the dutch partners, the 5 Dutch-German EUREGIOs, scientific societies, national (Robert Koch Institute) and international (European Commission) organisations. He is aimed to initiate networks and the dialogue of the local actors in health care in order to effectively monitor and control MRSA in the region. Finally, he heads the EUREGIO MRSA-net reference laboratory.[top]
